I can't say I feel that sorry for them. They've been engaging in political brinkmanship for months now since the election ended. Just last week the head of the RNC was sending letters to the vice president trying to get him to exercise extrajudicial powers during the 1/6 vote. [1]
The problem with brinkmanship is that it works really well... until it doesn't. Using it as a tactic takes some measure of intelligence to realize where the limits lie. Their current leadership has not displayed ability to recognize those limits.
