Reddit ads suck - and that's exactly the reason why the company is worth so much (and probably more).
The predominant consumption pattern is similar to the other major social networks - scrolling through an infinite feed of dopamine inducing content. This indicates that its earning potential could be closer to that of Facebook and Instagram with the right ads in place.
This also brings the point that Reddit would be an amazing purchase for Facebook if it could pass regulatory scrutiny. And if not - that they should at least collaborate on their ads
