Your comment ironically reeks of scientific ignorance itself. Science is as much about confirmation of prior observations and testing of established theories (and in fact more so by sheer volume of studies) as it is investigation of unexplained phenomena.
I spent 2 decades working as a scientist publishing and applying for grant money. If publishing or having a paid position matters to you as a scientist, then you have to do something novel. It doesn't preclude doing what you said - but that certainly isn't enough.
