I use Nextcloud and it works great. I do self host and with Docker don't find it all that hard with minimal maintenance.

The iOS client is excellent but to be totally transparent sometimes the app does need to be opened to make sure the photo sync happens.

Thanks for the link - I signed up for a free 2 GB Nextcloud with one of their partners. Experimenting with non-iCloud hosted notes now. It's a bumpy ride, lots of room for improvement.
