IPA came about because hops are a natural preservative and they needed to ship the beer all the way to India from England.
Sour Beer is just air fermented beer ala Sourdough Bread. It is actually harder to make Sour Beer than "normal" beer (it does not come out of the failure of normal beer fermentation either).
