Obviously the latter is a major issue but additionally I think great detriments are coming from an obsession to quantify and reduce everything into arbitrary models. sizzle is talking more about qualitative than quantitative studies, though.

The issue is that metrics are always imperfect, and so optimising for a metric always ends up damaging the thing you actually wanted to improve.
