Rockbox is a free replacement firmware for digital music players (rockbox.org)

Rockbox on a Sansa Clip was so awesome! Could play .FLAC,.OGG, could play DOOM, fit in a coin purse.

What prompted me to lookup Rockbox again after all these years was exactly the (fortunately unfounded) fear that I'd lost my Sansa Clip recently. I use it any time I'm mountain biking or road biking, and it got misplaced. And I couldn't tell from some quick browsing on Amazon which, if any, available standalone mp3 players have Ogg Vorbis support. And this is important to me because years ago when I ripped a substantial portion of my CD collection, I ripped them to Ogg Vorbis format. So I got to thinking that I could possibly buy a player which does not have Ogg support out of the box, and get it by replacing the firmware.

As it turns out, I finally found my old (and treasured) Sansa Clip in my Camelbak bag, where I left it last time I went riding. Very relieved to find it and not have to jump through a bunch of hoops to replace it. Still, it's good to know that Rockbox is out there and still being updated.
