Its a valid concern. There are so many issues with the current architecture there is likely no silver bullet.
The ultimate objective is to align the interests of users with the interest of service providers (abolish the user-as-a-product business model). Interoperability may be used as a fulcrum to force some price discovery about services, or allow building new business models that add value to the users, who knows...
