I'm curious, is a native login screen desired by project developers? I was under the impression that it wasn't, so much.

It's just that no one got around to that yet, also a login screen without disk encryption does not mean much. For reference, there's a drive encryption[1] implementation on alpha status, but it needs to be merged and reworked into the system.
