I've been using this for a few months now, and it's targeted to replace mlocate in Fedora in the next Fedora release: https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/Changes/Plocate_as_the_defaul... . I've been pretty happy with it, but I'll also add I never had any problems with mlocate.

Does creating the trigram index take long or use much space?

It takes 15s on my workstation and 5 minutes on a fileserver with about 17 million files (on a mix of fast and slow disks, and too old a kernel for io_uring).

Database sizes are 30MB and 200MB respectively.
