Regarding the sentiment of needing to control disinformation: isn't this only necessary if the people on the medium are ignorant of the facts of reality and cannot think for themselves?

Any "fact of reality", besides direct experience and word of mouth, is learned through the media. Thinking for yourself won't help - garbage in, garbage out holds for human thought as well.
