As an eager and indiscriminate child reader I had read most of the earlier Tom Swift books and had little clear understanding of the time they were set in or of which inventions remained speculation and which were long overtaken by events. Practical or not, Tom Swift's inventions and adventures were one of many inspirations for my interest and later career in science and technology.
