I also think it is best to keep a job in the beginning. At least keeping a half time job. In France we have a great unemployment benefit (2/3 of salary Netto). This is great for founders to be full-time on the project on the first year and a half. I used it. According to many business Angel, unemployment benefits counts for the BIG majority of 'investment' in a startup.
