As someone who "bricked" his Jetta in college by forgetting to replace the oil, I can also point out that the replacement engine cost around $6k, a (hefty) fraction of the car's then value, but nowhere close to its total
original retail price
.

The Tesla Roadster costs in the neighborhood of $130,000, so $40k is a fraction of its price.
