Canada demands Meta lift news ban to allow wildfire info sharing (reuters.com)

Do I have this right:

Trudeau: Do as we say or you can't operate here

Meta: Ok we won't operate there

T: but you're providing an important service our citizens depend on. Do as we say and operate here

M: ?

T: Hey Yukoners, it's Meta's fault your not getting wildfire information

Why should Meta do anything for these clowns?

When did they stop operating there? I thought they just stopped showing news.

You don't have it right.

Could you provide some details on which part is wrong?

The statement was made by Transport Minister Pablo Rodriguez.

There is no such thing as an independent minister. When a minister speaks publicly, they're simply giving voice to the PMO's words.

Sure.

The article has been updated with further statements by officials... but nothing official. If Canada is demanding this... canada.ca? An official statement by someone with authority?

Just ban Meta from Canada entirely.

This. I hope Canada sets the precedence. Once Facebook chances their business model, Canada can then reconsider letting back in. Set the example. Show other countries it's possible and hopefully they follow suit as well. That is, quite literally, how mass societal change works. Good luck!

Just wow. Using the government as a cudgel is how mass societal change works in authoritarian regimes with little regard for rights and liberties.

I for one don't want to live anywhere the state can dictate arbitrary terms to businesses, even the businesses I don't like.

It's bad enough that our democracy has so much centralized power that this legislation could get rammed through in the first place.

It isn't going to get rammed through because Canada's governments are neo-liberal governments. Their focus is on the well-being of corporations and don't govern for the people lest they upset some anonymous corporate shareholder.

The point I was making is, we live in a social contract. Be good to others and they will be good to you.

> I for one don't want to live anywhere the state can dictate arbitrary terms to businesses

How do you define "arbitrary" in this context? Is it ok if a business asks the government to lift regulations and restrictions on activities like drilling for oil in the middle of a protected wildlife preserve, or is that different?

Ah The China model. Thought Canada was a free society?

It stopped being a proper liberal democracy when they froze the bank accounts of protesters without trial.

> protesters

Groups like the armed crew at Coutts I would properly classify as domestic terrorists.

Are you trying to prove my point or are civil liberties just some joke to you?

The radio seems to be working just fine. I'm between three fires and they've been covering them all day.

They should ask news agencies to sell the rights to share articles for 0$. Why are they only after one party in the transaction.

Why is Canada still charging money for this news then?

Because the statement was made by Transport Minister Pablo Rodriguez, not Canada.

It really begs the question: “who is Canada?” If a govt minister makes a comment, did “Canada say it?” If the prime minister? The Canadian people? A lot of lazy headlines about this just use the “Canada” personified because of one minister’s comments.

It does bother me that Yahoo News has the more credible headline compared to Reuters.

So Canada does not have radio, does not have Cell broadcast but boy, it has Facebook.

Trudeau really is a fine human being. /s
