I don't think it was an obsession. It was personal with Chaloner, because Chaloner called Newton a fraud.

Newton was dutiful, honest and smart.




He was also petty and vindictive. As shown by using his status in a long running attempt to ruin Leibnitz's reputation over the invention of calculus.
