Hah. I sincerely love the innocence of this and what it says about cycles in modern history!
Once upon a time, many of us would publish our bookmarks on our personal domain, our geocities page, or our blog. It was an everyday thing that acted both as a way to share with others and to make our bookmarks more accessible before magical cloud services and auto-syncing were a thing.
Now, some new generation is stumbling into that practice, but gets to color it with a launch announcement because the internet is so pervasively commercialized. And again, I'm not knocking it. I'm just enamored more by what it represents than the particular aesthetics or content.
Haha, appreciate the comment. I believe we still do that to some extent, i.e. tweeting out links we like or sharing it to our stories. All in all, I am trying to put together a nice email every week to serve the same purpose you mentioned!
I see a lot of focus on startups, AI tools, productivity hacks, tech stacks, etc. What audience do you have in mind? I personally find that the most interesting sites on HN are outside of your scope here (examples: https://ciechanow.ski/, https://neal.fun/, https://search.marginalia.nu/).
https://twitter.com/ratheejaisal is one of the creators of the linked site who also apparently owns startups.fyi which is literally the first website haha
I've recently acquired this project from the profile you tagged. I will be removing those websites from the landing page and adding examples from our issues instead! Not to worry, our issues do not include any promotional picks at all. Thanks a lot for pointing it out!
Thank you so much for the recommendations! I have actually recently acquired this project and plan on expanding the issues to include the best newsletters, articles, videos, tweets, etc. as well. The focus prior was indeed a bit more on AI and startup tools, but I have a broader vision than that. Will be implementing the new sections into our issues slowly, but will be sure to update the landing page to reflect that as well!
That's simply to increase the appeal of the landing page, our issues have a diverse range of websites. I am even adding two new sections to our issues to cover the best newsletters and the best articles/videos/tweets as well! But thanks a lot, I am completely with you! Will be lowering the emphasis on AI to include broader recommendations.
Appreciate your comments. Those sites actually don't belong to me, they belong to the previous owner from whom I have acquired this project. I have changed the domain and done some rebranding already, in addition to some changes to the content style. I am adding 2 new sections to the issues and creating a hashtag community on twitter as well. However, it's worth noting that even the previous owner never promoted his own websites on the issues, that link is merely the landing page and those are placeholders. Regardless, thanks a lot for your comment! I will actually take those down and replace them with our most recent mentions.
FYI, this newsletter was just bought up. Email from yesterday:
"Hello everyone — It’s Arian Adeli
I’ve recently acquired Internet Is Beautiful and I’m looking forward to growing this project further with all of you! I have some exciting plans laid out that I can’t wait for you to see. For now, let’s get on with this week’s issue!"
Yup, thanks for pointing it out! This project was founded in January, however, I am now taking charge and making changes such as:
New content style to include the best newsletters, articles, videos and tweets.
A hashtag community on Twitter (X) for everyone to share their favorite links.
Great! I guess it is for the "best lesser known websites"? Because Google is certainly one of the best websites on the web, but I have the feeling it would be out of scope.
