YT is recently tightening the screw - both increasing ad count, Premium prices and trying to counter adblocking. Also removal of Manifest V2 is coming to Chrome in 2024.
In general there always were 2 aspects affecting adblocking efficiency:
1) the ad networks want to serve the files from own servers to prevent fraud
2) the sites try to mix content and ads as much as legally possible
Google and Facebook are big enough players to break first point - that kills dns/domain based solutions like pihole. And at least Facebook works hard on second - someone once linked how "Promoted" in HTML is actually "abcdPROMrandomlettersTEDxyz", with different CSS styles for each letter - just to prevent simple CSS selector based rules for adblockers.
