It's interesting seeing the orange-blue obsession of Hollywood has expanded to data visualizations as well.
I agree that it's a good "generic, professional" set of colors, but that's usually not the ideal goal. Know your audience, and you can do much better. Even something simple like "use the company color set" is probably going to get much better reception. If your manager likes bright and colorful, you shouldn't go with pastels.
