I've been tempted for years now this buy a digital rangefinder for exactly this reason. The prices even for old Fuji range finders still run keep me from pulling the trigger, but I have always been a fan of single use tools that do the job extremely well rather then a multi tool that does a bunch of things okay.
I actually had the GR II a couple years ago and sold it when I moved to a micro four thirds kit and a few prime lenses.
Only thing I missed with the GR was an optical view finder (also not on the micro four thirds I replaced it with). I had a Sony A700 about a decade ago and still miss that view finder. The thing was really heavy with a decent lens attached but I loved shooting with it.
I recently bought an iPod Nano and an old school Sony CD Mavica camera. While outdated, my experience with both has been so much better than the equivalent on my phone. This article speaks to me.
