I use a certain trick a lot when cooking, or timing anything with precision of a several minutes:

0) Suppose I am steaming vegetables for 8 minutes

1) I will check what time I started them (say 5:30)

2) I will forget the number of seconds that were on the clock when I started

3) I will pull the vegetables off at 5:38:30
