To those taking issue with the "raw" HTML claim when the author actually writes markdown syntax and converts it to HTML: SGML, on which HTML is based and which is originally understood to supply the authoring features HTML itself is lacking, has the SHORTREF capability [1] which can map custom tokens into markup and thus implement a large portion of markdown in pure SGML, if still not "raw" HTML.
