A substantial portion of US citizens would not date the beginning of due process back to 1776.

Technically the "due process" clause is in the 14th Amendment, ratified 1868. ;)

"nor shall any person ... be deprived of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law"

is in the Fifth Amendment.
