All the better if they have even cheaper/faster/more reliable options for transportation available. A car is a giant money sink when poor, even when not in NYC.

And a car is even nicer in NYC now if you're not poor!

Also AFAIK apart from being a bit better on schedule, there have been no material improvements for public transportation.
