Disappointing that most space photos are made by mapping an analog input onto a gradient and that this isn’t stated more directly.


That's really just photography in general. Mapping an analog input (photocurrent) to a pixel brightness.


That’s technically true - but the goal is to recreate the image for human perception.

The nasa images are colored artistically with no correspondence to how it would look if you were to visit.
