The largest methane fountain so far discovered in the Arctic Ocean (siberiantimes.com)

"'This result makes us reconsider the belief that subsea permafrost is stable and can only thaw by a few metres by the end of 21st century', he stressed."

Also, “Microplastic has been discovered in seas of the eastern Artic thousands miles away from residential settlements.”

Read up on methane hydrate and what it's like offshore. Years ago doing research seismic surveys off the Oregon coast, we saw a lot of it. Shows up as a very bright layer just below the surface, and very easy to find. It's just sitting there waiting for the right trigger.

So if this mechanism exists, wouldn't that point to temperatures rising very fast in the past as well?

In fact there are such periods, although the precision in the geologic record doesn’t allow us to quantify just what timeframe “fast” operated over, except “within 20K years”.

Google PETM if you want to see more.

Massive frozen bubbles of methane just waiting for the sea to get warm enough, then dumping gigatonnes of methane in the air is one theory about past climate events.

How do they get a boat this close without risking some sort of fire?

I doubt the methane concentration is high enough for that. The seas tend to be quite windy.

Is this the beginning of the end of the climate change debate? Will these melting permafrosts release an uncontrollable amount of methane into the atmosphere, further raising the average temperatures across the globe?

Only time will tell...

BS there's no methane fountain - it's all a Chinese/lefty/Exxon/Pentagon/academic hoax.

OK there is a methane fountain, but it's nothing to do with human activity.

Alright, the methane fountain might be in part a consequence of CO2 emissions. But it's no big deal. We all love fountains, don't we? And plants and stuff.

I've bought my patch of New Zealand.

I know your being sarcastic, but I would agree with most of your comment. I also have purchased my own piece of swampland/temperate rain forest in northern Canada, just waiting for the earth to warm up a bit now. I want to know how people can be so arrogant to think we can stop global warming, let alone reverse it, California is burning in November, the artic is melting, so it's time to stop wasting effort on such foolish ideas and accept the inevitable. It's time to focus our efforts on planning and preparing for a warmer earth and all the problems that come from that.

If you truly want to prepare for an apocalyptic event then you need to start building a community, acquiring survival skills, learning how to produce food and to communicate with other members of your local community without using modern means.

Sure, the land you bought might end up prime real estate sometime in the future, and that means that everyone will know it and flock there, regardless of how remote it is.

I didnt mention that I now live on my land an am building a farm..read my rant below for more info in you care..or dont.

Fair enough! Link to the rant, just for the record: https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=21419274

Who is the 'we' in your 'our' though? Essentially just the wealthy for whose false short-term 'benefit' the world's ecosystems are being deconstructed.

Whether for reasons of taste or ethics I have a distinct preference for solidarity rather than saving my precious self. And (quite separately) I'm pretty sure there's no way this civilisation is going down without widespread nuclear war, which isn't going to be worth surviving.

There would be nowhere to go to escape global ecological collapse. Mitigation is the only option.

If the plankton dies, so will your rainforest.

How did you purchase it? I've thought about it myself...

Well, I bought in British Columbia before the foreign buyers tax law. So if your not Canadian you would have to pay that now. I found a realtor and hired a notary public to do the paperwork. You can buy land in central BC for less than 500 USD per acre (not including realtor and notary fees, they will run you another 1500USD or so)

This just ignores the reality of real estate investing.

If we end up in a mad max environment - the government of Canada would just take the land and give you bonds that they would inflate before its useful.

You are better off buying bitcoin / gold / keeping money in an swizz account.

If we end up Mad Max there likely is no government to take it, or give bonds. Far more chance of having options with a cabin and some land to cultivate deep in the woods, than a bitcoin account somewhere on the internet that thanks to Mad Max no longer actually exists - well technically exists but no one gives a shit about data centres any more...

it's likely we'll look back on this time and realize the great climate change migration had already begun. it's a fantasy that you can isolate yourself from these massive changes by hiding out in a cabin in the woods.

Obviously I should have given a bit more information about the actions I am taking, as many wrong assumptions have been made. First off, I used to be an electronic repair tech, I hold several diplomas, an amature radio licence and have been using computers since the TI-99 4a came out. I consider myself an environmentalist, and now im trying to be a farmer who follows the pricipals laid out in the permaculture movement. My dream is to create enough abundance that I can feed myself, my family and my community, profit is not my ultimate goal. That being said, Im sick of virtue signaling people that arrogantly think that they can unite the world under them to change the climate back to the way it was. I'm talking to all you 'Gretas" out there!! Will you wear a "Make the Climate Great Again hat"? Are you really that naive? I dont cut down a tree needlessly but I do have and use a wood stove, I also have solar panels. I eat meat, and it hurts me everytime I slaughter one of the animals I raised, but I do it for my own sustenance and to conform to my regenerative farming beliefs. Putting oil back in the ground is a thousand times harder than toothpaste back in the tube. Finally, I am pro migration, and just because I am preparing for the future instead of trying to prevent it doesnt make me greedy, selfish or racist.

You wouldn't have to pay the foreign buyers tax unless you're buying in a major city in BC, so doesn't apply to where you're buying.

Generally you talk to a realtor... Zillow is a good place to start though.

Zillow is american. MLS.ca is where to start.

Do you really think you will be able to defend your 'property' against the millions that will stream north ?

Basic properties of reality and the physical universe you live in are changing. Why do you think ephemeral bullshit like human laws and civilization will survive ? 'Democracy' and the common rule of law are cute blimps in the history of man only emerging a few hundred years ago, even today many don't have it.

Pretty much. There is basically no way anyone, no matter how prepared will get out unharmed if global warming goes too far. A doomsday bunker won't help you much when a crowd of starving people smash your solar panels for not letting them in.

One just needs to be on island far enough away from the rest of humanity.

And hope that no one else has the same idea and that they are able to provide for all of their own needs and that they don't go insane on an island away from everyone else.

In order to survive an unlivable climate you would need some advanced technology which I'm not sure how you will maintain or source replacement parts after society has collapsed.
