I agree. Designers are favoring "looks nice" over usability. It takes multiple taps to even show the UI, then taps to manipulate it. With tap-failures, you're talking 5-6 taps to get work done on the device.
Overall UI design has regressed heavily since the 90s. It's clumsy, counter intuitive, un-responsive and high-latency.
The latency alone drives me bonkers. My smart tv literally takes 5 seconds between tapping the remote and feedback on the UI
