As someone that was there at Heroku after the acquisition, I don't think you can state that since the acquisition it's been consistently downhill. There isn't much debate that things have stagnated in the last 5-7 years which is a longer story on why probably.
Some examples of innovation that happened and were launched after the acquisition: buildpacks (at the time of acquisition Heroku was still Ruby only), Heroku Postgres launched forks/followers/dataclips all after the acquisition, review apps came several years after. Salesforce may have had an eventual hand in it, but there was still a lot of innovation happening due to the folks there in the near to mid-term after the acquisition for several years.
All that said, very excited for the new crop of players in the space. There are a number of companies trying to be a cheaper or more stable Heroku. Personally I'm excited about the ones that are taking their own unique approach. https://www.fly.io and https://www.railway.app are two that to me seem to bring their own perspective vs. just trying to recreate Heroku as a carbon copy clone. There are a number more in the jamstack space that have become staples such as Netlify and Vercel which are also doing great things.
I think the most interesting part of this is the PaaS disaggregation. Heroku built an exceptionally good Postgres service. They could not have done that with multiple DBs. Even their redis is pretty meh.
People like us (Fly.io) will end up either building very mediocre DB offerings or collaborating with DB companies (like yours: https://www.crunchydata.com/products/crunchy-bridge/) to ship stuff that's substantially better than RDS. I'm looking forward to it. Down with mediocre DB services.
Oh thanks for the props Kurt. The idea of PaaS disaggregation is definitely something I've been pondering for a bit and think I'm on the same page. At Heroku we were very opinionated about only Postgres for the longest time. We were fortunate to build-out the add-on ecosystem to give you more options, and explicitly did not want to run them ourselves for the longest time. I'm not sure how lucky we were vs. good, but surely spreading ourselves out to be platform + Postgres + everything else would not have resulted in the same experience.
It turns out running a PaaS is a lot of work. Running a DBaaS is also a lot of work. If you've ever dealt with database corruption, it's not the thing you can just hand wave and do the same way across all databases, you need deep expertise in it, that or you say it's not my problem and offer a poor customer experience. Personally feels like we can do better in service quality as platform/database providers so doing one thing really well feels like a good direction to head for a bit (at least that's heavily what we're betting on at Crunchy Data by just focusing deeply and purely on Postgres).

We don't have anything published, but some of the basic summary on why us:
- We give you full Postgres super user access, so less restrictions
- Quality of support, whether it's the Postgres basics of indexing or you've found a crazy bug deep in Postgres. Our team contributes a lot to upstream Postgres itself and can go as deep as we need to, but in general quality of support is a big differentiator for us
- We've been able to beat in cases price to performance just on the mix of Postgres experience coupled with our experience running on AWS/other clouds.
- Not locked into a single cloud, can go from AWS to Azure and vice versa with click of a button.

I'm curious about what "substantially better than RDS" means. RDS has been good enough for me for quite a while. Does it only matter once you get to a certain scale?
Craig here from Crunchy the company he's referring to. Not sure what he has in mind, but having built a lot of Heroku Postgres in the early days I definitely have thoughts on what can make a database great. There is a big gap between most developers and what you need to know to efficiently run Postgres. Without tipping too much of our hand, we're focused deeply on building an amazing developer experience for Postgres. Some things we're thinking about are how we can actively detect N+1 queries (common in almost every ORM, Rails, Django, etc) and notify you about them. We already have some big differences like shipping with connection pooling built-in so you can easily scale to 10,000s of connections, really any production Postgres setup should be running with pgbouncer, where as on a lot of providers it's either not an option or you're left to your own devices.
Good enough may be absolutely fine for a lot of people, but no lock-in to a single cloud, better developer tooling, proactive alerts and recommendations, quality support all feel like an opportunity to be better.
Kurt may have entirely other things in mind, and would be all ears if there is low hanging fruit in terms of feature or experience we can do to make Postgres even better for folks.
Some examples of the things I've missed around developer experience for a database, that Craig and the team made possible at Heroku Postgres, include:
- fork: ever had one of those "why does this bug only exist in production?" problems? It was so trivial to fork the DB and run your tests/hypothesis/whatever without the risk of actually impacting production. Same thing for _really_ testing a migration script or load test.
- follow: a similarly easy approach for getting a read replica which is super useful for generating reporting.
- dataclips: "hey, can you tell me X?" sure, and here's a URL to the results that you can refresh if you need an updated number in the future. So great for adhoc queries.
All of these are obviously doable with RDS and/or other solutions too. But the time taken to do any of the above was often measured in seconds, at most minutes. It's difficult to communicate just how impactful those kind of improvements are to your workflow. It's like it subconsciously gives you permission to tackle whole new problems, build better solutions, get answers to questions you never thought to ask before. Because the barrier to entry is so low you just do these things. You don't sit around wondering if you could.
A great developer experience around a database (one that goes beyond setup and basic ops) is a severely under appreciated thing IMO.

This sounds great! How does it work though? Is it using some special postgres feature or btrfs snapshots or something else completely?
Craig (the poster I jumped in to reply to) would know the specifics better than I ever did. My recollection is:
- restore from the latest snapshot (there was one whether you’d configured a custom backup schedule or not)
- replay the write ahead log over the top to catch the restore up to the point in time you asked for/when you ran the command. At least some part of this process leveraged WAL-E, which was a tool largely developed by Heroku employees and open sourced.
This was a decade or more ago though. The state of the art of postgres has moved on and I assume the team would tackle it differently if they were doing it today.
It's leveraging pretty native Postgres tooling that restores the base backup from within Postgres, then replays the WAL to the exact point and time you specify. With snapshots and other mechanisms you may get a database "up" sooner, but we've seen when we follow that approach it's so long for the PG cache to warm up that you effectively still have a useless database even though it's "up". Further Postgres itself depending on how you do it will have to go through crash recovery, which I've seen cases on some providers taking over 10 hours.
Doing the native approach in Postgres isn't perfect, but we've focused on getting the developer experience for it down so you can use your database and it "just work" and if something goes wrong you understand how to rollback seamlessly.
RDS runs pretty well! It's just irritating to use.
The good DBaaS give me a lot more power. This is true for Heroku PG, PlanetScale, Supabase, and Crunchy Data. Some of them let me fork a DB to run a PR against, some give me app level features that save me code, etc.
Most modern hosted DBs also let you run your own replicas.
I'm not really complaining about how well RDS works when your app is connected to it and it doesn't failover/go down for maintenance/etc. It works fine as a DB backend. That's just a baseline I don't think is very valuable anymore.
we’re using aiven.io and quite happy, although hard for me to compare. you can port across clouds, which is reassuring if we need to switch. Otherwise their support was helpful debugging a couple of db issues (in our own code). Wonder how they compare in this matrix if anyone knows?
aiven.io is quite good. They went broad instead of deep, so they're not as good at Postgres as the Postgres specific companies. But they're probably better Postgres than a PaaS can build by themselves.
that’s useful to know that others do postges better. We use their redis as well, so in some ways, breadth is useful for them and for us.
at the time we picked aiven, we couldn’t find any redis-specialized hosting with instances in GCP europe if I recall. so their breadth also plays in terms of locating near the customer servers (important for latency)
You can easily use pg_dump to do a "vanilla" backup to s3. Its a managed db service but if you wanted to run your own you can extract your data and move to a new db. The lock is not "complete" you are acting like you can't even extract your data.
"Only export your data with pg_dump" is one of those misfeatures that makes RDS mediocre. They don't really expose much of the power of the underlying DB.
you cannot ssh to RDS machine. so u need to get another EC2 machine and pg_dump over the network. the connection breaks - yes has happened to us multiple times.
RDS makes it very inconvenient to do anything other than use their managed services.
because RDS backup data storage is VERY EXPENSIVE even compared to s3. this is very deliberate.
Ah that explains seamless migration from Heroku and support for Heroku postgres on fly.io. I appreciate not building subpar services just to show 'Yeah we have that too'.
My current strategy is to use Heroku to test waters, If the validation is successful then migrate to fly.io.
The first few years after the Salesforce acquisition were incredible - for quite a while I thought of Heroku as one of the best examples of an acquisiton where the product improved after the release.
At the time we would joke a bit that acquisitions would get some new very high priced domain. We even looked at getting the .app TLD for all Heroku apps to get their own .app domain. We ended up with our acquisition "gift" as Matz, which was great to see it support Ruby and the community given how Heroku couldn't have become Heroku without the Ruby and Rails community.
When you hire a celebrity programmer like that, what exactly do they end up doing?
Do they actually have responsibilities in their role or is it more just to slap the branding on to them while they continue to do their own thing, whatever it may be? (in Matz case I would think he has more than enough full time work on Ruby itself)
Heroku/Salesforce essentially just picked up the salaries for Matz and part of his team to work on Ruby, with no other commitments as far as I'm aware.
I'm trying to switch from Heroku to Render but it is awfully slow compared to Heroku, my Rails project takes something like 1 minute to start after it has been shut down gratefully. Moreover, it breaks the CSS assets and uses the older assets instead of the latest ones. I do not why, it is a really small project and I have none of these issue on Heroku

I recently moved some apps over to Render and I've been loving it so far. Ease of use with Heroku with some "infrastructure as code" style YAMLs (they're called blueprints). Performance is about the same and cost nearly halved.
I can only speak about render.com as I use for a mix of 10 static websites / Go webapps + cloudflare for DNS and caching proxy.
It sounds prosaic but "it just works".
Specifically compared to Digital Ocean Apps (which I used before render):
* the dashboard UI is better designed and faster
* the builds and deployments happen faster
* similar price (to Digital Ocean, much cheaper than Heroku)
* similar capabilities (attached disks, hosted Postgres, hosted redis) but the velocity seems better i.e. render.com seems to implement features faster than DO
You would think that "well designed dashboard that displays instantly" would be a table stakes in an offering like that, but sadly it isn't.
I wouldn't straight out recommend fly.io. See, part of Heroku's value proposition was their excellent support.
I had asked fly.io to delete my account since there wasn't a provision to delete it from their interface and they never bothered to reply and put me in some kind of shadow ban from re-registering with my email.

not really, it's available only in france and it's crazy expensive, we are talking about 115€/month for a container with 4gb of ram, so large that the offer is named 2XL. Wow now 2cpu/4GB of ram is considered 2XL
I'm historically a huge Heroku defender. Been using it for a decade now, and my company still uses it despite being quite large and getting a lot of traffic. It's always been a great product and the early Salesforce days they DID ship a ton of new stuff and improve rapidly (despite a narrative that they didn't). Like, it got REALLY GOOD the years after acquisition.
That being said... it's insane that we haven't been able to deploy for over two weeks and nobody there seems to care. So we're looking to move now, since it's clear Heroku has pretty much just given up at this point.
If anything, the number of outages in the past two weeks on https://status.heroku.com/ has increased to the point where colleagues have asked if they can mute our #devops-alerts channel subscribed to notifications there. That's the canary in the coal mine if there ever was one. I have to imagine that rushed updates and maintenance windows are in reaction to the massive leak of credentials a couple weeks ago - but in a well-run organization that would trigger a need for additional caution, not less. Something is horribly wrong at Heroku right now.
I'm in the same boat. We were in the process of moving off of Heroku a few months back. We had to pause that migration for a number of reasons, but the initial jump was to save some money.
Now I'm kicking myself for not pushing the migration to completion. I've basically had to spend the last week recreating much of our deployment pipeline using a very complicated local deployment structure that only I can execute. It's a complete nightmare. My only guess is that the Heroku team is just a handful of overworked developers. For the Github integration to be down this long they must just not care. Like at all.
Sure it's unsexy as hell in today's world of <insert-fav-deploy-tool-here-that-calls-bash-things-underneath-anyway> but it works so nicely !
Interesting side story, about 10 years ago I was employed by a "big"(for me at least) price comparison service, and for 5 of the 7 years we use a simple bash script to deploy most of our API's and frontend.
Everyone agreed (it's the wrong way) to do it but no one wanted to dive into the alternatives.
We even found a bug where there were some race issues (some weird service configs) when we deployed that it only worked every 2nd time ? horror
So we just "always deployed twice"... since it's was super fast !
I did this sort of stuff for a time, it's even better if you link webhooks to your git provider and make those fire the actions directly in the server.
Once the script was set up to do all the build and deployment, we only needed to push to the release branch to load it, just as painless and with more or less the same underlying ideas that the easy CI/CD you get with providers like Heroku et al.
It still really pays off to know a thing or two about sysadmin nowadays, literally and figuratively.
I think you're underestimating the complexity of our codebase. Aside from the usual blockers, we have hundreds of repos (our Staging feature for Enterprise allows customers to deploy our code on their own cadence) all tied together using pipelines.
We have our own custom release management software, which now doesn't work. Different repos have to go out at the same time so things don't break. Plus, we extensively use their review apps for code reviews, which we've lost access to.
Lastly, not everyone has access to deploy directly to Heroku, so not everyone would be able to 'git push heroku main'.
Could we fix all of this and get it working? Yeah. But we want to be focusing on building our product, which is why we pay Heroku a ton of money so we don't have to worry about this.
Sounds like you needed to start look into migrating into a hosted k8s solution (AWS or whatever), which will probably be quicker than waiting for Heroku
We were in the same position (although luckily far fewer repos than you!). It took a bit of fiddling, but in the end I found that it was actually quite easy to fix this by tacking on a force push to the main branch of the heroku git repo at the end of our existing CI process (essentially treating heroku got as a deploy api that happens to use the git protocol)
Don’t blame you for wanting to move, but you might find that approach helpful as a quick fix.
* It was automated. Now it requires someone to pay attention and do it. You need to check if CI passed, and pull, and be sure you pulled the version that passed CI (maybe someone pushed since then).
* Review apps, the only remaining heroku "killer feature", do not work at all.
The fact that this has been broken for 2 weeks tells you everything thing you need to know about the state of their code base, and the resources salesforce is willing to allocate to heroku.
Has anyone switched to AWS App Runner? Curious how it went.
The codebase is sound. I would almost certainly expect that the reason for the slowness is the ability/diligence and paranoia levels the SFDC security teams have. They won't want to turn this back on until they are absolutely certain it's 100% again.
I’m pretty confident if ‘putting it in the ci pipeline’ were a straight-forward option for most people, they probably wouldn’t be paying Heroku to manage review apps. I’ve used Heroku review apps for years and have also written and taken over different custom deployment pipelines. Review apps have a million different ways to be a giant time and money sink if not planned and implemented properly.
This doesn't work if your Git repo is above a certain size. Some of our apps (fortunately not production) haven't been able to deploy since the incident.

I haven't used Heroku in a few years, but it has served (using the Hobby plan) as a really low cost way to host web apps.
I have been reading through the comments on alternative providers, and even though I haven't used it, GCP's Cloud Deploy looks interesting also (a very long time ago, I used AppEngine a fair amount).
Heroku hobby is a joke in comparison and hasnt been updated in a decade while all their addons have gotten less and less featured while costing more and more
I host all my static assets on IPFS which practically nullifies the bandwidth limits of Netlify
I upload static assets to IPFS and add those static links to my project instead of having an "assets" folder.
IPFS is fast enough, I had these concerns too so I use a gateway for links as some of them cache files on their own CDN, for free.
Yes, I use a pinning service, I was extremely hesitant as many of them are just SaaS hosting like Pinata is and charge by bandwidth used, but there are free ones like https://web3.storage which for some reason is combining Filecoin and IPFS together for each upload and liveness/pinning.
Ironically, Pinata also acts as a gateway and can then be used for free if you want. But there are other gateways. Cloudfront has one but what it decides to cache is strange.
I don’t like this either. I think maybe people are more used to this in the US, but I personally think that if you can’t be objective you need to be more humble in your communication.
… of course Coke can trash-talk Pepsi and vice-versa… but if I’m making a technical assessment of competing products or software platforms I get a bad feeling of anyone using those sales tactics.
In Germany there are, for examples, rules regarding comparative advertising. Way stronger than anything the US has. Therefore we are not used to competitors trash talking other brands in ads.
So I am in the same boat when it comes to SEO/content marketing like this. It is advertising, nothing more.
And personally, when evaluating products, I agree with OP. I also like the people behind a product to be a bit more humble when comparing themselves to competitors.
That can be true, especially for objective facts, but I would expect such criticism to be biased to the point of unreliability - "We taste better than x (according to our staff)", "we have higher quality than x (at double the price)", "we’re like x but cheaper (and we have nearly 20% of their features)". And even then, as an input there can be value, but it's helpful to at least know that it's coming from a competitor so I can anticipate the bias.
For all heroku's frustrations (and I agree with all of them in the article), it is still the only thing that "just works" for a standard monolith web app. Heroku is not cheap, but it is still cheaper than a couple full time employees + aws.
It is really too bad they aren't innovating - they are just burning up their 10 year lead in the space. I wouldn't start a new project on Heroku - not because of the cost, but because I don't expect them to last another 10 years.
I'm currently evaluating PAAS services. The use case is early-stage SAAS with very small dev team who want to focus on the product and not have to deal with Kubernetes or the AWS services soup. Maybe further down the line that might be necessary but right now there isn't sufficient time or people for devops time-sinks. So PAAS it is.
I've used Heroku before and it was fine, and price as you say is not an object compared to developer time, but when I see people not being able to deploy for 2 weeks that rings very loud alarm bells. It means they don't have enough people to fix the problem (whether customer service or developers) and they can't afford or don't want to hire more people. Salesforce clearly are happy to let Heroku die on the vine, and are OK with current customers slowly leaving the platform while they squeeze the last drops of profit from them. That's a shame, but it is what it is. So instead currently looking at other options - Render, Google Cloud Run, fly.io etc.
A lot of AWS’s offerings are hard to use. But s3 really isn’t. There’s also firebase storage and backblaze b2 in this space. And they’re all easy to use standalone.
I suppose that's what this is https://elements.heroku.com/addons/bucketeer, but using S3 is really easy. And honestly I wouldn't trust most heroku addons are maintained outside of the most popular - postgres, redis, memcache.
Where do you store things like images, PDFs, binary files etc involved in your web apps? Most CRUD apps in my experience involve some kind of artefacts that need to be stored in some way.
You can store these on Heroku, but you have to remember that the volumes are volatile - so, you don't really know when given environment will restart and wipe all your temporary files that are not committed to the repo.
If your resources are required, then they should be committed. If you want persistent cache, there are options both inside and outside Heroku.
I think I agree with you though - it's weird for me to have code on Heroku, and then log in to AWS, to put stuff in S3 manually.
Heroku already provides a managed database service using Postgres, so you're fine for that.
It's if you want to store any kind of user uploaded or generated binary or large content - images, PDF reports, audio files, videos, JSON documents, code, logs - all common things you may want to manipulate in a web service.
It's honestly strange how no one has eaten their lunch yet. Besides the extra services they now offer (which you aren't required for hosting a simple app), you could probably have a team bang out the basics in a few months.
You could even just be a layer on top of AWS and probably make profit from not many users, as long as you're cheaper.
There are a lot of startups that have banged out the basics in a few months. The are getting mentioned all over in the threads under this article. But the basics aren't good enough. Heroku looks simple, but does a lot, and pretty much does it all right. Their documentation alone is amazing and it would take more than a few months to create docs of the same quality.
Yuuup. That is the genius of Heroku. They make almost everything very simple and the tougher stuff relatively easy to understand and configure. All of that took many many years of iteration and refinement, which is why the competitors are going to take awhile to get there.
Heroku is not _the only thing that just works for standard monolith web apps_. Plenty of others in this space, like netlify, vercel, firebase, etc. I don't know how they all compare to each other, I don't use any of them.
Netlify and Vercel are great, but they're limited for deploying backends. You're limited to a FaaS paradigm with the languages they support, and if you need a database you'll need to host it somewhere else. It's a long ways from the flexibility of running arbitrary containers + a managed database that's easy to connect to.
We're big Heroku customers; despite that, I largely agree with the points in this article and there's a voice in the back of my head asking every few months "is this worth it?"
Whenever I research the new crop of Heroku clones (the one being hawked here, and others) the pitch is always "it's just like Heroku but you can run it in your own cloud". It's mind-boggling to me that none of the clones understands that I DON'T WANT TO RUN IT. Yes, I pay Heroku a premium because I like their software (the pipelines are great, dyno formations mostly Just Work) but what I'm really paying for is:
* Never typing "ssh"
* Never thinking about a full disk from a runaway log file
* Never thinking about a load balancer or a certificate
* Never waking up because a Postgres host has failed
* etc, etc
I have no interest in a "Heroku but you run it" PaaS but I'd pay though the nose for a "Heroku but it's actively developed" PaaS.
I’ve been using Heroku since 2013. In both a hobby and professional manner. I was even one of the first employees at a Healthcare specific Heroku clone (before we expanded to other products). I’ve been extolling the virtues of Heroku for nearly a decade.
Whenever something new comes out there’s always some critical piece that’s missing. The simplicity and the “it just works” factor of Heroku cannot be understated.
Take logging for example. Let’s say I want to add papertrail to a Heroku project. How do I do that? I click one single button. Heroku handles the environment variables, standing the logging container up, making sure I have access to it, etc. I don’t have to do literally anything to get it to work. The same goes for any add-on or service. Need Redis? Sure! Just click this button. That’s quit literally all you need to do.
Compare that to AWS, which is a nightmare of config hell, permissions, roles, policies. And that’s just getting it created and stood up. Not to mention maintaining it.
I had written down some thought about the various compute options available to run apps. One of my takeaways was exactly this - "Run your own PaaS on Cloud IaaS" seems too much work for too little gain.
As always it depends on the context. I worked in a company where we streamed video to millions of end users and it was 10x cheaper to operate our own datacenter instead of renting cloud things for that. We also used hosted cloud offerings where it made sense, for other applications.
You can invest more time up front and automate it with an IAC tool and and CI tool to build/deploy. Probably nothing will be as hands off as Heroku, but there are lots of measures that can get you closer.
It is more configuration, yes, but it's far less than say ec2 and nomad. We run a very light production load on it and in 6 months I've had to intervene once (to bump our limits because we spiked slightly more than I expected us to)
I think AWS App Runner (+ Aurora Serverless) could be even better. From what I can tell, App Runner is supposed to be the successor to Elastic Beanstalk and AWS's PaaS offering. App Runner seems a little immature right now (it launched last year and was missing some key features on launch), but it is actively being developed.
I've always been hugely disappointed that AWS doesn't have a better PaaS offering, given Heroku's languishing, and I was hugely disappointed when App Runner launched and was missing some key features... but there is at least a little hope that it's improving.
Indeed. I wrote about recreating what I wanted from Heroku within ECS Fargate. There was a lot of initial configuration but very, very low maintenance work.
I see bunch of people around me that want to run their own k8s.
People somehow magically forget that then they will need to run their own servers to host k8s and then deal with k8s and then deal with their app deployment.
If I can deploy app just like on Heroku and not have a server and not have to deal with orchestrator that is winning deal for me. Other way I will stay with my VPS setup and install apps directly on these.
I recently deployed a web app on render.com and it looks it fits the description. I just told it to set up a PostgreSQL database, pointed it at my git repo and told it how to build/run the static site, web server, and cron job. It was pretty simple, it's got great features like logs, a console, and monitoring. The price is reasonable too.
Usually, companies migrate from Heroku to cut the cost as they grow, but there are other reasons too:
- The recent Heroku outages.
- Lack of flexibility to adjust the available CPU, as Heroku offers six basic dyno types. As a result when the company grows they need to deal with overhears.
- Heroku runs its servers on AWS, however, developers do not have access or control over the regions. This is an issue for the companies that deal with data requirements.
- It does not offer support for crons/jobs.
- Heroku default environment does not offer static IPs. (Private Spaces are only available on the Heroku Enterprise subscription.)
Have a look at cloud66.com, it creates an environment like Heroku but on your servers on any cloud. This creates many benefits, including persistent storage and support for all available regions of your cloud provider of choice. But it also makes a big difference in availability: your application is not dependent on Cloud 66’s availability and won’t go down. Disclaimer:I work at Cloud 66.
In the last decade, a vast majority of DevTools companies have positioned themselves as “A better Heroku.” And yet, when people actually need a Heroku alternative, everything comes up short. This is a testament to a solid product Heroku built. It was definitely ahead of its time.
I took a few minutes to scan Porter's website. They have a free tier. But when I read the getting started documentation, it says that I have to provision everything in my existing cloud infrastructure (e.g.; AWS). So I'm paying for the services in AWS. It seems I got lost in the story. Porter doesn't immediately feel like a replacement for Heroku.
OP and Porter founder here. The article was meant to outline the most common technical limitations we see companies on Heroku bump up against as they outgrow Heroku. For individuals and teams running smaller workloads on Heroku where saving $ is a chief concern, Heroku is probably still a good option even though they’re declining in market share (this unprecedented recent outage aside). Porter is designed for companies that are maturing off Heroku for the technical reasons we mention or for those already looking to get the automation of Heroku in their own AWS/GCP cloud.

My understanding is if deploying with `git push heroku main`, that application's GitHub repository was not viewable by hackers (but those apps deployed through 'Heroku GitHub Deploys' were). (please tell me if my understanding is incorrect).
I think most Heroku users would deploy with `git push heroku main`, although that's purely hunch.
Unrelated, but I'd add one more thing to the article, which is that Heroku docs aren't easy to give feedback on. I'd love for the docs to be on GitHub so shortcomings or inaccuracies can quickly be addressed. Currently, to point out a correction to the docs, you'd have to write a support ticket and 100% chance that support ticket isn't going beyond the person who received it, so nothing will get actioned.
First off, I would strongly disagree with the idea that Heroku post-acquisition was stagnant. As well-said elsewhere, tons of product was shipped to industry-best standards: postgres/dataclips, Heroku Connect, buildpacks - as well as introduction of CI and preview apps. But it's clear that in the post-k8s and post infra-as-code world there's been a surge in new options for how teams manage their infra and DevOps toolchain.
Of course, I’d agree with the idea that conflicts of interest should be disclaimed: I’m the co-founder of Coherence (https://www.withcoherence.com).
Seems the key issues raised by the article and comments here are:
- costs and resource control constraints when using Heroku
- fixed base costs of k8s when using self-hosted PaaS type systems
- flexibility constraints of heroku-similar PaaS
- the desire for teams to get more ownership than Heroku gives them when it comes to configurability, reliability & security
Coherence disagrees that the next generation of PaaS should be a black-box - like Heroku, many next-gen PaaS are not hosted in your own cloud and re-implement the wheel when it comes to functionality like persistent storage, hosted databases, and application support services like redis. In the end, we believe that building on top of the major clouds (Google, AWS, Azure, CloudFlare, etc…) is the right choice. I was just looking at AWS App Runner today and just thinking about how miserable it would be to figure out how to use AWS's proprietary build pipeline tools to replicate what I have with Heroku - and I've been using AWS forever - I just hate their UX, their docs, really every thing they do except the actual infrastructure services. So I was just thinking someone should build a product that gives me the Heroku CLI, pipelines, add-ons, review apps etc but implements it all on top of standard AWS services. No runtime services at all, just orchestrating configuration and metadata, service provisioning etc. I know there are other companies in this space but I wish someone would just blatantly steal the Heroku UX and then sell me that.
I'm at a small startup (about 8 engineers) and for the most part Heroku has been a great solution for a team of our size.
However, the recent github incident was a major PITA for us, and has us seriously considering leaving the platform for the first time. We're still working on getting all of our automated deployments back up and running.
In addition, we had just put in some work to start using the Review Apps feature, which now seems to be gone for the foreseeable future.
This is just an ad for their own service. Heroku is doing fine. They provide exactly what they advertise, and the service has been rock solid for over a decade. Sure it doesn't fit everyone's use cases, but it doesn't need to.
Ultimately platform-as-a-service has always been a dead end. Companies either want more control over the infrastructure (so use plain VMs or Kubernetes), or want to forget about servers entirely (opting for services like Lambda and now edge computing). Everything in the middle (Elastic Beanstalk, App Engine, Heroku) has been stagnant for a long time now.
Taking over two weeks to fix their GH integration is not "doing fine.". I've been a huge Heroku booster for years, but you can't ignore this. The GH breakage is a huge red flag.
Yes, this is :(, but you should be serving all your static assets through a CDN, which will have http2. I can't think of a scenario where I would want to serve anything other than the dynamic content off the heroku server. I don't think http2 buys you much there. So you should be able to get away with at most 2 requests - one to the heroku server, and one to the cdn.
The 2022 answer is actually to bake the CDN into your PaaS. Requiring a whole separate CDN for static assets is complication no one needs in their life.
The changelog that's linked in there is depressing: only updates for languages/environments and an occasional minor update to the actual platform every few months.
So this is more of a sales pitch for Porter - which is fine, I didn't know it existed and these are pretty compelling reasons to try it instead of Heroku.
For me - the real selling point is that yes, Heroku is expensive - but the cost of a competent devops engineer is much, much, much higher. So unless it's literally impossible to do something with Heroku that needs a specialized skillset - the "devops as a service" part of Heroku is worth every penny in my opinion.
Agreed. We have a small number of high value users so we’re actually running on the smallest non-free tier (mostly to avoid cold starts) with almost zero head aches. It’s like $15 a month.
The only frustration we’ve hit was mentioned in the article: static IP for integration with 3rd party services (VGS), but we used an add-on and I think we’re still in the free tier, or it’s a few dollars a month.
The cost? We were actually spending more on GCP due to ham fisted provisioning, plus a $150k dev ops guy. So ya, I’m pretty happy about the cost.
Throwing this out there since it hasn't been mentioned yet but AWS's copilot tool (https://aws.github.io/copilot-cli/) has been really nice for setting up an ECS cluster with a good build pipeline that we use in almost the same way as we use Heroku. It's definitely more mental overhead than Heroku but it offers more flexibility and tying directly to your AWS account. After setup it has been maintenance free for over a year but debugging parts of the build pipeline were painful at first. It recently started supporting AppRunner now that AppRunner can access VPCs so I'm looking forward to trying that at some point too.
Porter customer support is insanely good. If you are trying to migrate from Heroku to AWS, they make it incredibly easy and go out of their way to engineer alongside you.
I was deeply impressed as a user and have nothing but positive things to say about their team.
we have been using caprover for 6 months, until we got the first overload and I had to find what exactly was happening during an outage. I love the solution but decided to "go by myself" after this.
currently using a combination of docker swarm, traefik (via service labels) and portainer.
totally in love, doing good for our needs (1 monolith, 12 microservices)
Heroku is my tried and true. I've likely done thousands of deploys over the years and have never had one go bad or leave my app in a bad state. I have rolled back an app a few times due to bad configs and it was always quick and left me with a huge sigh of relief.
That being said, they are very stagnant on features. A dyno has operated the same way, at the same size, at the same price for like 10 years now? The main features I would like to see are auto-scaling for all dynos and IPs that allow you to restrict database traffic. Render looks promising in that department and could likely get business from me if Heroku doesn't change in the next couple years.
I built my first business on Heroku. Started 5 years ago and still, for the most part, it's going strong.
There are some really strong downsides (especially after the last 2 weeks) but as a dev team of 1 (mostly) it's been a life saver, and that's enough to overrule all the other downsides.
Having said that, we've suffered our own issues, with cost, latency (we're in AU) and scaling being the main ones.
We're building a new product that we're betting very heavily on and it's all on AWS serverless. I wouldn't choose Heroku again.
I think it was worth it 5 years ago, but as time goes on it becomes harder to justify.

AWS RDS and GCP Cloud SQL do synchronous replication, so you are much less likely to lose data in common hardware failure scenarios.
With those options available, a managed DB with async replication is a no-go. I don't understand how so many businesses would be ok with it. (I suspect most people don't even realize that Heroku HA is async.)
key thing for me here is: why did Salesforce buy Heroku? How does Heroku fit into Salesforce strategy?
When Heroku was incorporated by Salesforce there was no consumer facing capabilities in SF: everything was for business/sales users so Heroku was attractive to build public facing assets seamlessly connected to SF data (hence Heroku Connect). But then SF started incoporating other consumer facing featuers: Communities, Commerce (Demandware), heck they even have their own CMS now. One can predict they will push lowcode/citizen development beyond Force.com. Where does that leave Heroku? What does it bring to the table now for Salesforce?
Not having any sort of basic disk/storage solution has been painful for us. There's been a lot of situations where I would love to store a big blob of data on the disk while processing it but if that Heroku dyno reboots - poof, its gone.
I imagine Heroku would say the same, and thats fine. We deploy a bunch of Rails apps, backed by Postgres, via Heroku and most of the time what we're doing fits neatly into the 12 factor definition.
However what happens if you're doing something that doesn't really fit that definition. For instance we have a Rails app with some background workers doing data processing. I would very much like to have these workers just dump to disk, so I can take a big chunk of data and move it into Postgres at once. But I can't do that with Heroku.
So basically this is something that Heroku isn't designed to do, but its also something I would rather not need to go one level of abstraction deeper, to AWS directly for instance, in order to do. And its also something that every single one of their competitors offers.
My hunch is that if you try to build your solution with the constraints enforced by Heroku your system will be more resilient.
If it's about being easy to dump stuff to disk, using S3 or even Postgres for something like this could become easy after a few attempts. Another pattern that would come out of this exercise is trying to deal with that job in parallel by breaking it up into sub-tasks (many workers at the same time).
Anyway, too little context for me to flesh out a solution but the gist is that in general these constraints nudge you in a 'healthy' direction when designing systems.
Boy howdy do I agree with this. Filesystems are immensely handy. We (a sometimes competitor of Heroku) shipped persistent volumes very early and it's been amazingly empowering. The DX gets difficult, but we're ironing that out over time
They were early in the devops game, and provided an easy way to run things without having to deal with hardware, networks, scaling, operating systems, maintenance, etc... yourself. Nowadays I think they are no longer running on innovation, but on inertia.
Point it at your got repo, click to choose which tech stack you’re running, write a 1 line yaml file to tell it what command to run to start up, and you already have a server running and a build pipeline that deploys when you push your code.
Heroku disabled my entire account with zero notice due to a fraudulant DMCA takedown notice, costing me tens of thousands of dollars. I struggled to be able to speak to anyone, and when I finally got a hold of someone, they treated me like a criminal despite making it clear I was the victim. Really shitty attitude, and the end result was getting my account reinstated but only with a "don't let this happen again, shithead" sort of treatment.
Losing GH automation did cost me exactly 20min. changing the alias from push github to push to both was trivial.
I think Heroku did the right thing, but Travis still hasn't responded and changed anything, whilst the exploitation is still going on. If only I got get rid of Travis in my GitHub integrations. Deleting the app and actions and hooks hadn't changed anything. Travis has no access anymore, but PR's still block on the not existing Travis CI.
Have people that have grown out of heroku considered more dull but battle-tested solutions like CloudFoundry where you run a buildpack driven heroku-like abstraction on top of your own cloud provider (or whatever you want really)?
Very widely used by enterprise, but also free and open-source.
If anything, this article solidified for me that the main reason remains cost only. Points (3) and (4) are probably not among the most important things for the vast majority of co's, even if they have 10s or 100s of employees.
They can have backends too, not just stuff rendered for the client
You can also have those discreet compute instances as well, Netlify I think just recently introduced this, not sure how recent
To my knowledge the only thing missing is a persistent storage solution, so you still need a database elsewhere but your api can read and write to it
I personally dont do system design that way with my “web3” sites, as these are basically frontends to smart contracts, so I’m essentially using nearby nodes as compute instances and users pay to update the state of the compute instances and what the client therefore displays. Surprisingly economical for developers, I see that model attracting more devs very quickly as the stack and deployment is less complicated and cheaper and customers are already there.
Pretty different approach, but with many application architectures today you can move beyond "hosting" into pure serverless with a stack like Vercel + Convex (https://convex.dev)

https://railway.app/ is really good. Easiest way to get a project up and running IMO. You can deploy from existing GitHub repos or a project starter in one click.
Dokku also supports Dockerfiles, Docker Images, Tarballs (similar to heroku slugs), and Cloud Native Buildpacks. I'm also actively working on AWS Lambda support[1] (both for simple usage without much config as well as SAM-based usage) and investigating Replicate's Cog[2] and Railways Nixpacks[3] functionalities for building apps.
There are quite a few options in the OSS space (as well as Commercial offerings from new startups and popular incumbents). It's an interesting space to be in, and its always fun to see how new offerings innovate on existing solutions.
Warning: There are a couple people in this thread mentioning products that they're investors in. I won't call them out expressly, but I think people should be direct about their incentive alignments. It's disingenuous and borders on astroturfing IMO.

There's a lot of these companies popping up that offer a "Heroku replacement", and once you dive in, you realize you have to pay $300/mo for a Kubecluster + $200/mo for the wrapped Kube service
In our experience, people move off Heroku for a couple things:
- Cost: Kinda self explanatory but Heroku pricing ramps hard
- Flexibility: Heroku's not great for anything beyond stateful monoliths
- Scalability: Notoriously Heroku's SLAs aren't that great
In my mind, you don't replace Heroku with a minimum $500/mo Kubernetes cluster. Not only is this cost prohibitively expensive, but Kubernetes itself is a jet engine, and if you're not trained to use it correctly, you can risk catastrophic failure (on costs ballooning, on dataloss, etc)

I’m calling attention to my inability to trust this person and their company’s marketing tactics.
Your pricing page is confusing and I can't find enough details about the offerings.
1. What happens if i exceed the outbound bandwidth quota?
2. In Team, what is "seat" ? Also pricing number of team members is a bit of a turn off. I don't expect that kind of pricing from an infrastructure company.
3. What if I need more than 100GB disk in developer plan?
4. The postgresql offering - Does it offer failover, replicas, PITR etc?
5. How are logs handled?
Railway looks really cool but what is the procedure if you want more than one of the same data store in my case one redis for cache and a second redis for aggregating usage metrics?

I agree 100% on the misdirection happening on many of these so-called Heroku replacements.
Offering me 'kube-as-a-service' over a layer of AWS or whatever on top of some massive cloud provider isn't really a heroku competitor. Thats just throwing some plywood over a ball of mud and trying to offer some hand holding with all the rough edges. I don't wanna have to decide between AWS or GCP (see one of the first docs on Porter: https://docs.porter.run/getting-started/provisioning-infrast...), or even think about them. I don't want to learn k8s to spin up some side-projects, and ultimately if you go with one of these the abstractions _will_ leak. I don't wanna go look at AWS UIs to see the status of my database (see https://docs.porter.run/deploying-addons/postgresql#persiste...).
The fact is if you need k8s, then you probably need a team of smart people setting it up and continually managing it who are very knowledge about your app and its specific needs, because you better have the scale that requires. Because if you are spinning up a k8s cluster for a monolith or a few microservices w/ 200 customers, you are just going to burn thru dev time and cash.
Heroku has been constantly praised since it took off because it does massive amounts of things behind the scenes to abstract away all the operations you don't want to worry about. You can launch a tiny prototype or small to medium startup in under an hour. You can add a DB and Redis w/ snapshots and automated backup and monitoring all w/i the Heroku API or UI. Does it expose the full power of the datastore and let you do everything you can do with RDS or a VPS? Of course not, but thats a totally valid trade off when you are just trying to get something shipped to see if it has traction.
So if you are looking for Heroku alternatives: know that things like Porter aren't really direct competitors, no matter how much they are marketing themselves as. From what I've seen Render and Railway are much more in line to be the next Heroku-replacement.
edit to mention, since the parent brought it up: I have no horse in this race. I'm still a fan of Heroku and use it daily, but don't work for anything to do with dev tools or PaaS.
Would you be willing to go over our Heroku environment to see if we'd be a good fit for Railway? I can't tell from the demo if you have things like automated backups, rollbacks, workers, add-ons for logging/monitoring/performance/etc. Those are all tablestakes for us. But Railway certainly looks great.
- We have automated backups but they're for our own internal disaster recovery. User backups are something we want to do but haven't put on our roadmap yet
- A key thing with Railway is "It's just code". So, a worker is just another service. We don't have special casing for specific types of code. We just run the code! So, yes we do support them
- We have a lot of stuff built in, but we also support deploying say, a containerized DataDog agent, or a Dockerized sidecar, or application level Sentry integrations
We have a very particular vision of how this stuff should be done, so it's going to take some time. My promise is to always be super honest about the platform, so it would be more of an "Customer Discovery" vs a Sales call

I was trying out your free tier and was looking for any way to run shell commands (like heroku run). There's "railway connect" to connect directly to a database but really what is needed (i.e. table stakes) is to be able to do something like "railway run ./manage.py shell" remotely (NOT local).
Some examples of innovation that happened and were launched after the acquisition: buildpacks (at the time of acquisition Heroku was still Ruby only), Heroku Postgres launched forks/followers/dataclips all after the acquisition, review apps came several years after. Salesforce may have had an eventual hand in it, but there was still a lot of innovation happening due to the folks there in the near to mid-term after the acquisition for several years.
All that said, very excited for the new crop of players in the space. There are a number of companies trying to be a cheaper or more stable Heroku. Personally I'm excited about the ones that are taking their own unique approach. https://www.fly.io and https://www.railway.app are two that to me seem to bring their own perspective vs. just trying to recreate Heroku as a carbon copy clone. There are a number more in the jamstack space that have become staples such as Netlify and Vercel which are also doing great things.
