> There are no factory feedlots in Argentina

If only this were true.

"Images of cows on pasture are still common in Argentina’s guidebooks and on postcards and butcher shop windows, but cattle production now largely relies on the feedlot"

When this blog post was written in 2006 many of these details were true. Today, as you have noted, it is not always the case. This HN post should have warned with [2006] in the heading

Very well written, very funny. Even though I don't eat much red meat, the article makes me want an Argentine steak. Although I'm not sure how happy I would be with the rest of Argentine cuisine.

I've had some of the best steaks in my life in Argentina. But they also have amazing pizza, their empanadas are great as are their pastries. I'm sure there are many more examples that someone more adventurous could list.

He's not wrong about restaurants opening late by American standards. Order takeout at 8 PM when a restaurant opens and you'll be eating around 9:30.

The exceptions are rare; one restaurant near my apartment in Buenos Aires was open for dinner at 7:00 PM and I often started my meal completely alone except for wait staff.

You should give Argentinan cuisine a chance as you might find something you like, and if you find yourself in Buenos Aires there are always places that cook foreign cuisine when you get homesick for your favorite food. But yeah, dude, at least once try the steak.

People always mention the pizza but I don't think it's that good to be honest, for some reason the crust is always soft and the toppings are so basic that makes domino's look a million times better. The meat and asado really are great though

One of my favorite pieces of food/travel writing.

By the same author is is the ridiculously funny “The Alameda-Weehawken Burrito Tunnel”

Growing up in bbq land, I was still not prepared for Curitiba Brazil. I had protein withdrawal for months after that trip.

What is barbecue land?

A geographic region where the local culture heavily identifies with a cuisine that's heavily focused on the various cooking methods that use live fire and smoke to cook the food?

Yeah, I got that much. I wanted to know where that is. Is it a US-specific thing, like "Rust Belt" or "Corn Belt"?

A classic. For those who don't know, this is the Pinboard guy.

vino y asado is all you really need
