Do you want to make games or do you want to make game engines? A lot of people have the two confused. I would caution going into game development in general... If you just want to make game engines it's a much smaller world and much harder to break into.

A broad approach would be to just start making games - pick Unity say - and while working at your regular job - make some games on your own. Nothing helps get your foot in the door more than showing initiative, creativity and a get it done aptitude than having some samples we can talk about.
