This solution is far from compact though, right? If you show it at all times, it takes space and adds clutter. If you hide it behind a menu, it adds extra clicks.

No I meant it seriously. It's clear, even if it takes a bit more space. And it's accessible whereas something like color changes on an icon are not.

And very inefficient.
