pretty sure i can do that in KDE using the gui, in the system-config/keyboard :) and it's saved in my home, because my /usr is immutable

.config/kxkbrc it uses this file, and here's

the print of the system settings GUI, is the gnome folks can't make simple things work that's on them, kde is powerful when needed ;)
