I believe they were tricked by the data. "Only 1.2% of users use this feature, so we got rid of it!" And they did that 100 times with 100 different features. And pissed everyone off.


Exactly: "The z key is only used in 1.2% of keystrokes, let's remove it! (It's a power user feature available using alt + ASCII code)"

With data-driven ui decisions, it's not so easy to see these fallacies when staring at a spreadsheet.
